Land in Windhoek, here you will be met by a transfer driver holding a sign in the arrivals hall who will escort you to the city centre. Your hire vehicle will be delivered this afternoon. Rivendell Guest House is located in a quiet suburb close to the city centre and has just ten guest rooms. Relax around the swimming pool or lounge area, and maybe take the afternoon to explore the shops and restaurants of the city. Facilities include satellite TV lounge, swimming pool, self-catering kitchen, small bar, internet & guest phone and safe parking. Breakfast included.
In a high-lying valley camping guests will find ten secluded camping sites which are generously proportioned and shaded by trees. Chilled beverages and meat for grilling are available at the kiosk. The spring water swimming pool close to the kiosk is for our guests to enjoy. Camping guests are warmly invited to join hiking tours onto the plateau of Waterberg and a scenic drive through the nature reserve. Camping only basis.
Depart this morning for your drive toward the eastern, Von Lindequist Gate of the Etosha National Park, Namibia's premier wildlife reserve. Your drive to Onguma campsite, just outside the Eastern gate should take approximately 4 hours.
Each of the campsites at Onguma have their own shower, toilet and power point. One bundle of wood is provided and the facilities of the Onguma Bush Camp are made available to camping guests as well.
Etosha in general offers excellent game viewing opportunities while simply driving. The Park is dominated by the vast Etosha salt pan, and many water holes exist, joined by a network of well maintained gravel roads to enable visitors the best chances of seeing the many inhabitants of Namibia’s premier wildlife reserve. Species present in the Park include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe & zebra in addition to many antelope and bird species. Camping only basis.
You will stay inside Etosha for this night, undertaking self guided game drives and staying at Okaukuejo in the southern area of the Park.
Okaukuejo was the first tourist camp to open in Etosha and it currently functions as the administrative hub of the park, and home of the Etosha Ecological Institute. It is situated at the western end of the pan, and about 120km north of Outjo. The Okaukuejo waterhole is often voted as the best of all the rest camp waterholes and enjoys an amazing array of wildlife.
Animals that come appear to be oblivious of the camp – unaware of the bright lights or the people sitting on benches just behind the low stone wall. The light doesn't penetrate into the surrounding bush. It creates something of a stage - with the water at its centre - focusing the attention on the animals that come to drink. During the dry season, you're bound to see something of interest by just sitting here for a few hours in the evening - so bring a couple of drinks, binoculars, and some warm clothes to settle down and wait. Among the regulars are elephants and jackals, while lion and black rhino often visit in the dry season. Camping only basis.
You will drive south today, out of the Park and towards Damaraland. You may like to take a look at the Petrified Forest on your way. Continue on to Aabadi Mountain Camp.
The restaurant is within walking distance and camping guests are more than welcome to book meals, or just a drink!
The campsite is spacious and lies at the riverbed. There are enough trees, so there is always shadow and privacy. There is a bush shower with only ‘cold’ water (heated by the sun) and flush toilet. The restaurant is within walking distance; here you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink. Each campsite has its own fire place/BBQ, so it is also possible to prepare your own meal. Camping only basis.
Drive onwards to the coast this morning. The scenery changes from the mountains of Damaraland to endless, gravel plains towards the coast. If time allows, you may like to make a detour to Cape Cross fur seal colony where as many as 100,000 individuals may be seen during breeding season.
Swakopmund itself is a fascinating and intriguing resort town, complete with German half wooden architecture, monuments, historic buildings, well maintained gardens and palm lined avenues, coffee bars and great seafood restaurants.
In addition, there are many adventure activities such as sand boarding, tandem parachuting, fishing & quad biking which can be arranged prior to arrival. We can also recommend some excellent day trips including the marine sanctuary of Sandwich Harbour, a unique environment comprising towering dunes, a freshwater lagoon and the wild Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, a half day boat cruise from Walvis Bay may offer the opportunity to see dolphins, fur seals and many species of marine birds.
Cornerstone Guesthouse is a small, private and peaceful bed and breakfast an easy walk away from the sea and the town centre of Swakopmund on Namibia's fascinating Skeleton Coast. Occupying a quiet corner of Swakopmund’s old town near the marine museum and the old brewery, Cornerstone Guesthouse offers the charm and intimacy of a family-run B&B combined with the modern amenities of a luxury hotel. Breakfast included.
Return to Windhoek today, and call into our offices where a representative of the car hire company will meet you and transfer you to the airport in time to connect with your onward flight.
