A representative of ATI will meet you here to hand over your vouchers, road map and itinerary and to answer any last minute questions you may have. Your hire vehicle will be delivered this afternoon. Rivendell Guest House is located in a quiet suburb close to the city centre and has just ten guest rooms. Relax around the swimming pool or lounge area, and maybe take the afternoon to explore the shops and restaurants of the city. Facilities include satellite TV lounge, swimming pool, self-catering kitchen, small bar, internet & guest phone and safe parking. Breakfast included.
Drive towards Otjiwarongo and Waterberg Park today. The area is dominated by an impressive, sandstone plateau with many self-guided walking trails and a beautiful spring-fed swimming pool. The porous nature of the sandstone allows many natural springs to rise through the plateau, accounting for the lush vegetation, which characterises the area. The plateau summit is home to many rare species including rhino, leopard & roan antelope which can be visited with National Park guides and vehicles only and can be booked as an optional activity upon arrival. There is also a restaurant and small shop here. Breakfast included.
This well positioned lodge offers 19 air-conditioned thatched bungalows, a campsite, swimming pool and open restaurant. The bird life in this area is outstanding with over 300 species having been recorded. The farm is also home to the largest breeding colony of white-backed vulture in Namibia. Etosha in general offers excellent game viewing opportunities while simply driving. The Park is dominated by the vast Etosha salt pan, and many water holes exist, joined by a network of well maintained gravel roads to enable visitors the best chances of seeing the many inhabitants of Namibia’s premier wildlife reserve. Species present in the Park include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe & zebra in addition to many antelope and bird species. Dinner & breakfast included.
Spend today making your way slowly across the Park to the western most rest camp of Okaukuejo. You may like to stop at the central, Halali camp for lunch and a rest during the heat of midday before continuing later this afternoon. During 2007 the three Etosha rest camps saw extensive renovations and major improvements to their facilities. All of the old rooms now sport beautiful new interiors and many have been completely re-built to cater for the changing demands of international tourism. Spend the evening relaxing with a drink at one of the seats overlooking the floodlit waterhole. The rooms are just a short walk from the restaurant, bar and small shop. Each room contains an en-suite bathroom, small bar fridge and tea & coffee station. Some also have an outdoor BBQ area. Dinner & breakfast included. Photo credit: Anne Hornsby
Continue your journey this morning, driving towards Damaraland via Outjo & Khorixas.
You may like to take a look at the Petrified Forest on your way, a bizarre collection of largely intact gymnosperm trees that have been preserved and transformed into stone by ongoing anaerobic conditions. You will arrive at Twyfelfontein Country Lodge this afternoon. The scenic bar and restaurant overlooks the dry, boulder strewn plains and you may enjoy relaxing around the swimming pool this afternoon. Alternatively you could take part in an optional nature drive searching for desert elephant, or perhaps hire a mountain bike to explore the nearby area.
Maybe make an excursion to the Twyfelfontein rock etchings and paintings today, a local guide will escort you around the ancient hillsides which are open for guests between 08:00 and 17:00. This area is covered in numerous fascinating examples of San rock art and is well worth a visit where a local guide will explain the area to you. The ‘Burnt Mountain’, an interesting area of volcanic rock, is also close by as are the dolomite ‘organ pipes’. Dinner & breakfast included.
Drive onwards to the coast this morning. The scenery changes from the mountains of Damaraland to endless, gravel plains towards the coast. If time allows, you may like to make a detour to Cape Cross fur seal colony. Swakopmund itself is a fascinating and intriguing resort town, complete with German half wooden architecture, monuments, historic buildings, well maintained gardens and palm lined avenues, coffee bars and great seafood restaurants.
Cornerstone Guesthouse is a small, private and peaceful bed and breakfast an easy walk away from the sea and the town centre of Swakopmund on Namibia's fascinating Skeleton Coast. Within a few minutes from the guest house you can walk to beaches, cafés, restaurants, lively pubs, Swakopmund tourist attractions and a variety of interesting shops and markets.
On day 7 you will enjoy a morning boat cruise from Walvis Bay. Check in at the Catamaran offices in Walvis Bay by 08h45. This trip takes around 4 hours and will introduce you to the fauna of Namibia’s coast, including many water bids (flamingos, pelican & cormorants included), playful Cape fur seals & hopefully dolphins. Before heading back to the jetty you will enjoy fresh oysters, snacks and sparkling wine. Breakfast + catamaran cruise included.
Set off this morning for the dunes of the Namib Desert, near to Sesriem and Sossusvlei. The drive should take approximately 5 hours and you will arrive at Desert Homestead this afternoon. This lodge is a beautifully decorated and friendly establishment with a bar, restaurant and pool, optional horse riding or nature drives within this spectacular area can be arranged. The lodge is designed in a rustic, farm style and is located just 27km from the entrance to Sesriem & Sossusvlei. Enjoy home cooked meals and friendly service.
Wake early on the morning of day 9 to drive the 70km through the dune fields to Sossusvlei. Most of this road is on tar, the last 5km are sandy 4x4 roads. Explore the dunes around the salt pan of Sossusvlei, and maybe walk across the sand to Deadvlei, a bizarre collection of ancient camelthorn trees and a photographers dream. Dinner & breakfast included.
Klein Aus is a beautifully positioned private farm located on the edge of the Namib Desert with spectacular views from the boulder strewn hillsides across wide open plains. The Desert Horse Inn offers luxury rooms with spacious, en-suite bathrooms close to the main restaurant and reception area. Relax with a sundowner on the wooden deck overlooking the farm before savouring your delicious meal in the restaurant or sipping your drink in the bar with its cosy fireplace for chilly winter evenings.
There are self-guided walks that can be taken on the farm as well as optional nature drives to view the Namib wild horses, or you may decide to just relax in the peaceful surroundings.
You may like to drive to Luderitz for the day where you could enjoy an optional boat cruise (this can be booked through Luderitz tours & safaris who have an office on the high street), or a drive out to Diaz Point where you may see some of the many bird species that can be found here. Nearby is the ghost town of Kolmanskop, abandoned to the desert when the diamond mining became unfeasible in this area. Dinner & breakfast included. Photo credit: Bruce Turnbull
Drive east today, on the B4 road to Seehiem and then the C12 to Canon Roadhouse, situated at the northern end of Fish River Canyon and close to the many viewpoints over this magnificent landmark, the second largest canyon in the world.
If time allows, visit the viewpoints at Hobas and take a short walk along the Canyon edge to watch the spectacular sunset. Canon Roadhouse is a friendly lodge with en-suite rooms, private campsites, a bar, restaurant and swimming pool. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and excellent Italian flavour of the restaurant tonight. Dinner & breakfast included.
Anib is a pretty air conditioned lodge, situated on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and the perfect place from which to explore and experience the rare beauty of this region.
