The NamibRand Nature Reserve represents all facets of the Namib Desert including vegetated red dunes of varying shapes and colours, endless plains and mountains. This desert experience trail allows you to learn about the diversity of desert organisms, adaptation and scenery. A good fitness level is required. Guests must sign an indemnity form and have to provide proof of medical evacuation insurance in advance. Equipment for hire includes sleeping bags, light iso mattress and back packs (recommended 55 litre plus), water bottles 2-3 litres. Clients have to carry weight up to 15kg (all equipment and food is to be shared plus personal belongings).

Pick up time at about 8h00 in Windhoek. Heading southwards we will reach Die Duine House at NamibRand Nature Reserve in the afternoon. A 2-3 scenic hour walk takes us to our first overnight stop in the dunes. The terrain today mainly consists of vegetated red sand dunes with endless views. Drinking water will be available in at the camp.

Day 2: Ysterwielnek, NamibRand Nature Reserve

In the morning we continue to walk over the dune fields. The afternoon terrain consists more of plains, rocky outcrops and mountainous areas. Walking up the Kudu Gorge on Schafsberg we have an excellent view over the red sand dune area. We will view some prehistoric hunting hides (stone circles) used by the early San Bushmen. A game trail leads us to a dry waterfall; in good rainy season years there might be water. Maybe we will be lucky enough to see Kudu or Baboon. Continuing we walk up a gorge to the top of the mountain and descend to overnight at Ysterwielnek. Drinking water will be available at the camp.

In the morning we walk up to 5 hours along the foot of the mountain. After crossing the gravel plain we ascend about 100m to reach our overnight camp by lunchtime. In the afternoon we will explore the surrounding area of the camp. Drinking water will be available at the camp.

Day 4: Dune Campsite, NamibRand Nature Reserve

By climbing 450m to the top of Gorrasis Mountain we will see the vegetation type changing. Here you will find different reptile species from those observed on the plains and dunes. The view over the dune fields in all directions is breathtaking. By descending we reach the Horseshoe Wilderness Area. Overnight camping again in the dunes. Bucket showers and long drop toilets are available.

Day 5: Return to Windhoek

A short walk through the vegetated sand dunes leads us back to Die Duine House after which we will drive back to Windhoek.
