:: The Seychelles Archipelago
This group of 115 granite & coral islands lying peacefully adrift in the Indian Ocean are renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful & pristine areas. The archipelago is believed to have arisen from the last remnants of the ancient Gondwanaland landmass and lies north of the cyclone belt with year round stable, warm & humid weather. Tropical rainstorms grace the lush landscapes but are usually confined to brief, late afternoon downpours and the islands are malaria and tropical disease free. The temperature hovers around 30C throughout the year, perfect for a romantic beach escape. The flora & fauna of the Seychelles were lucky enough to be spared permanent human habitation until the late 18th Century with the first official landing taking place on the main island of Mahe in 1742. The islands were claimed in the name of the French crown in 1756 and the first settlement was established in 1770. Today’s population is allegedly descended from just 15 white people, 5 Indians & 7 Africans! In 1814 the islands were handed over to England following the Napoleonic wars and in 1976 Independence was granted. Today the local culture revolves around an eclectic and vibrant mix of French, English, African and Indian culture, music & cuisine. The official languages are French, English & Creole, a patois language originating from a mixture of French and a variety of African mother tongues.
The people of the Seychelles have made enormous efforts to conserve their natural heritage and almost 50% of the total land area has been designated as nature reserves. There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Alabra Island with it’s 150,000 tortoises and the Valle de Mai which has been likened to the original “Garden of Eden” and is home to the Coco de Mer, the World’s largest seed. Some of the numerous endemic birds include the Seychelles Scops Owl, Seychelles Bulbul, Fruit Pigeon & the Black Parrot.
In addition to exploring the hundreds of beautiful beaches, many of which are idyllically deserted, there are numerous activities that can be arranged including world class diving & snorkelling, deep sea & fly-fishing, windsurfing, sailing, golf, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing & guided day trips to nearby uninhabited islands. Accommodation ranges from 5* resorts to unimposing guest-houses, the welcome is friendly and genuine and the food is magnificent focusing on fresh seafood cooked with a spicy Creole twist.
