Routing:Gondwana Fish River Canyon to Gondwana Fish River Canyon
Highlights:Fish River Canyon
Details:A beautiful hike through the second largest canyon in the world, using mules to carry your luggage and equipment. All meals included + professional guide and accommodation in simple rustic camping/ huts.
Make your own way to the start of the Mule Trail this afternoon. Transfers can be arranged from Windhoek at an additional cost.
A barbeque at the Mule Station, a charming 1950s farmhouse in the arid rolling hills, sets the atmosphere for the trail. Before the delicious fare is laid out on the long outdoor table, hikers pack their pannier bags to the accompaniment of the gentle sound of the mules from the enclosure below. Enjoy a night on soft beds.
This morning you will be transported to the starting point for a meander down to the Löwen valley and the confluence where the Fish and Löwen rivers meet. The Löwen – one of main side-arms of the Fish River which also feeds the Naute Dam - was so named for the lions that once roamed the region. Bright yellow tents set on the grass line the riverbank against a striking rock face at the Löwen Camp while rock martins swoop in celebration and the mules tethered on the opposite bank chew contentedly on their lucerne. All meals included.
Koelkrans Camp, nestled next to a cliff face, is reached after a day’s walk along the Fish River stepping over boulders, time-patterned rocks and walking through soft river sand etched with Cape clawless otter tracks. Simple rooms with beds provide comfort and hot showers soothe any stiffness, while tea and sundowner drinks are appreciated from the lookout point before the group moves into the cosy cabin for dinner. All meals included.
Although Horseshoe Camp can be seen on the ridge of a steep cliff-face early on the following day, it is reached by a circuitous route that ascends slowly to its height. A highlight of the trail, the spectacular camp overlooking the river below has breathtaking views, as do the ablution facilities. Dome tents equipped with beds provide a safe haven from the elements and a rustic cabin, a pleasant place to lap up scenery, toast, laugh and dine on mule handler/chef’s delicious lamb potjie (stew). All meals included.
After a peaceful night’s sleep and hearty breakfast in the stone cabin perched on the edge of the cliff, the group is transported back to Mule Station to unpack their pannier bags and contemplate returning to civilisation enriched with spectacular scenery and a healthy serving of exercise, good food and those great outdoor experiences that shape our lives. Breakfast included.
